Who's Been Looking at YOUR Credit?Posted on: 2007-04-11Few people realize that each time their credit is checked, information provided to the credit bureaus immediately becomes a commodity that is sold to companies that sell and resell it. You may be surprised to know that the practice of generating and selling these lists IS allowed by law.
Credit bureaus have found a way to increase their revenues without your permission. These “inquiry leads” include name, address, phone numbers (including unlisted), credit score, current debt, debt history, property information, age, gender and estimated income. Your privacy is sold over and over again.
The good news is that you can make it stop. You can “opt out” or remove your name by phone at (888) 567-8688 or online at www.optoutprescreen.com. You must opt out at least 48 hours PRIOR to having your credit checked to make sure it is processed in time. You can choose a five year or lifetime option. Lifetime option requires a signature.
